Maldives SUP Surf Quarters Break

About Maldives

Scattered across the equator in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the gem like islands of the Maldives depict the rare vision of a tropical paradise. Palm fringed islands with pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons, crystal clear warm water and stunning coral reefs with abundant varieties of marine life and hosting a massive variety of world class waves that are now accessible to the travelling surfer.

Surfing and Paddling

During the last decade, surfing in the Maldives has attracted many surfers from all over the world. The same swells hitting Indonesia deliver the goods to the Maldives except that the latitude is a little higher and the SE exposure has less energy.

There are three main surfing areas;

  1. The North and South Male Atoll, the surf season runs from April to October during the South-West Monsoons. The bigger swells run from May to August with 2 to 8 ft waves on offer all season.
  2. Central Atoll standard waves are long and clean with size varying between 2 and 8ft as well. During southern hemisphere winter (April-October), it’s pretty much never flat.
  3. Southern Atolls right at the southern point of the Maldives are best for surf from February to April and from September to November, there are always waves in the area but the winds become very strong at other times of the year.

A lot of surfers prefer surf charter boats to access the many different points in the North and South Male’ Atolls. On a boat there are no constraints and surfers can choose among the most famous breaks.

Luxury Motor Yacht – Carpe Diem

MY Carpe Diem was hand build in 2008 completely out of wood in the Maldives. She’s 35m long motor safari yacht, has three decks, 10 cabins and can cater for up to 20 guests with two tenders to get in close to reefs, waves and the islands or for fishing trips. Carpe Diem is also kitted out for diving and will be an optional extra for our clients. With 10-13 experienced crew you can rest assured that every detail is taken care of.

The 10 guest cabins include one Suite, one Deluxe Cabin, two Double Cabins and six Standard Cabins.

All Cabins have individually controlled A/C, safety deposit boxes and ensuite bathroom with shower and toilet.

Power on board is 220V with UK 3 pin types.

Internet available onboard.

A total of 6 standard cabins, SALSA, SCUBA, SURF, SMILE, SNORKEL and SKI are located on the cabin deck below the main deck. 4 of these standard cabins are very spacious having a queen double bed and bunk bed. The 2 other standard cabins each have a twin bed and bunk bed and can only take twin sharing occupancy. All standard cabins have portholes.

The Carpe Diem has two double cabins, SEA and SAND located on the main deck, which are a little smaller than the deluxe cabin on the upper deck and standard cabins on the lower deck. They have queen size double beds and window view. Further amenities TV plus DVD/MP3 players.

Opposite the suite on the upper deck is another big cabin, the STAR cabin, with a queen size double bed, flat screen TV plus DVD/MP3 player and 3 windows overlooking Maldives blue waters.a

The very spacious suite, our SUN cabin, with over 20 m2 in size is located at the upper deck. The suite has a king size bed, a wide flat screen TV plus DVD/MP3 player and an ample closet plus storage space. The 5 windows give a beautiful view to the sea.

Fishing has always been the lifeblood of island nations and the Maldives is no different, this place has been dubbed the ‘fishiest’ places on the planet. Pelagic species are often the favourite target although there are a lot of reef and shallow water species that will give you a run for your money like Bonefish, Barracuda, Groper, Snapper and the king of fish, the Giant Trevally. You will need some heavy duty gear to get the big GT’s found out here onto the boat. Or try the local way with a landline.

Cruising the deep waters along the outside of the reef Yellow fin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna, Dolphin Fish, Wahoo, Sail Fish and Marlin all cruise these waters.

Diving & Snokelling

Although the Maldives is known for the stunning beaches and azure waters that typify the tropical idyll, its life beneath the water’s surface, which is becoming ever more respected by scuba divers in the know. The Maldives islands have some good coral reefs, but it’s the abundance of marine life throughout the country that sets it apart from other dive destinations. The water temperatures remain 27 to 28 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

With dive masters and an instructor available on board you will have the opportunity to complete a dive course in paradise or the freedom to dive to your limits. Carpe Diem is also setup with Nitrox diving facilities. If diving isn’t your thing then one of the dive team can take you on a guided snorkelling tour.

Please enquire for updated dive rates.

7 Nights / 8 Days

DAY ONE Arrive in Male no later than 12pm, meet group and board Carpe Diem 12;30-1pm.

DAY EIGHT Disembark 8am, flights after 10am are safe. Earlier flights are possible and transfer / taxi can be arranged from the harbour.

Departing Male harbour in the Maldives you will find the island nations most famous waves in the North Male Atolls. The long breaks offer right and lefts for the beginner to intermediate surfer to the professional with waves ranging from 1 – 3 metres. In general SUP surfers may prefer the South Male Atolls depending on the size of the swell.

A surf charter should be flexible, not locked into strict daily miles and locations. Rather it should be based around mother natures plans for the swell and wind. Because of this we will not finalise the Charter itinerary with the Captain and crew until closer to departure. With a generous milage allowance we have the luxury to travel further than any standard charter to get away from the crowds and into the best waves. Rest assured, you will get what you are looking for with a boat and experienced crew that know the area very well.

Typical Day in the Maldives

Unlimited surf sessions – first surf is at sunrise and last surf at sunset. Surf until your heart is content, between 3 cooked meals, diving when we stop at famous dive sites, fishing or island exploring.

What do I need to bring?

  • Check if we have something suitable or pack your favourite SUP, it’ll have to be around 9’6 max with some airlines claiming up to 9’8. Check with your chosen airline before booking your flights.
  • Inflatable SUPs are great for some casual paddling & SUP yoga. Some basic boards can also be hired in Male, pre booking required for this option.
  • Spare leg rope & spare fins and feel free to throw your game rod, lures and the short board or mini mal if you have room.
  • Bath and beach towels provided.
  • If you are booking your own flights make sure you check your airline guidelines and luggage allowance.
  • Pack your favourite swimwear and most comfortable clothes, dress for the tropics and get ready to relax.
  • We will give everyone the chance to visit local and resort islands. On local islands it is respectful to cover your shoulders and knees while walking the streets and visiting local establishments. Resort islands usually charge a visitors fee of $100USD depending on the level of luxury which may also be used at the restaurant and bar, a way of making sure your spend at least $100 at the resort. Dress code depends on the resort and the level of luxury; in general you do not need to cover your shoulders and knees inside a resort but it might be a good idea to dress appropriately should you wish to have dinner at a five star resorts restaurant.
  • The sun is HOT. We would be very very surprised if anyone needed any kind of wetsuit or neoprene tops while surfing, paddling, swimming and snorkelling. Should you like a wetsuit for diving we can provide one on the boat.
  • Sun protection and keeping hydrated is important. You will be given your own reusable water bottle on board with access to unlimited filtered water and ice. Water tee’s, long and short sleeve, surf hats, sun glasses, lots of sunscreen as a minimum.

Consider the board your own for the charter. When it comes to damaged boards the person who has been allocated the board for the trip is responsible regardless of who or how the board is damaged. Allocated surfers will be responsible for any professional repairs that need to be carried out at a later date in Australia regardless of who or how the board is damaged. It is your board for the trip and you will be responsible for it. It offers modern offordable accommodation with air-conditioned rooms. The hotel has recently been refurbished and provides free Wi-Fi, an airport shuttle can be pre arranged with reception or take a taxi from the airport for $10.

The breakfast is very basic, I would recomend walking to a near by cafe ‘family room’ or ‘bread matters’ they both do a lovely breakfast.

“Simry Beachside Maldives” is another option which is next door to Coconut Tree.

Simry Beachside Maldives offers accommodation in Hulemale. It also provides massage services, room service and an express check-in and check-out feature.

WIFI is included onboard in the lounge areas, if you require internaet in your cabin you will need to get a local SIM card, there is a Dhiraagu shop (the primary local telecom company) just to the right of the airport arrivals area upon exiting. Aprox USD$30 for 5GB.

If you are heading to Male or want to do shop on inhabited islandss, exchanging some rufiyaa will come in handy. The coins, in particular, are quite attractive and make an interesting souvenir in themselves, but the smaller denominations are rarely used or seen.

You can get select major currencies exchanged at the airport after arrival at the forex center in the airport itself, hower USD is accepted almost everywhere across the Maldives.

Settling bar tabs, dives, any additional expenses can be done so by using credit card.
