About Maldives

Scattered across the equator in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the gem like islands of the Maldives depict the rare vision of a tropical paradise. Palm fringed islands with pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons, crystal clear warm water and stunning coral reefs with abundant varieties of marine life and hosting a massive variety of world class waves that are now accessible to the travelling surfer.

There are over 1,192 islands in the Maldives Republic, measuring 820 km’s north to south and 120 km’s east to west, the closest neighbors are India and Sri Lanka. People who have never been to the Maldives often have trouble comprehending that there is almost NO land. It is sea with little pockets of coral dotted on top of an old volcanic mountain range. Only 202 of the islands are inhabited; there are no hills or rivers: almost no tides, the highest point above sea level is less than 10 feet.

Surfing and Paddling

During the last decade, surfing in the Maldives has attracted many surfers from all over the world. The same swells hitting Indonesia deliver the goods to the Maldives except that the latitude is a little higher and the SE exposure has less energy.

There are three main surfing areas;

  1. The North and South Male Atoll, the surf season runs from April to October during the South-West Monsoons. The bigger swells run from May to August with 2 to 8 ft waves on offer all season.
  2. Central Atoll standard waves are long and clean with size varying between 2 and 8ft as well. During southern hemisphere winter (April-October), it’s pretty much never flat.
  3. Southern Atolls right at the southern point of the Maldives are best for surf from February to April and from September to November, there are always waves in the area but the winds become very strong at other times of the year.

The most famous breaks are in North Male Atolls. These long points breaks offer rights and lefts, whether for low intermediates, intermediates or for professional surfers, with waves ranging from 1 to 3 meters. For beginners South Male atoll is better suited

Surf spots can be accessed a number of ways; by surf charter boat, point breaks straight off the resort or by Dhoni transferring surfers from the resorts and camps. Not all surf breaks are accessible from land.

A lot of surfers prefer surf charter boats to access the many different points in the North and South Male’ Atolls. On a boat there are no constraints and surfers can choose among the most famous breaks. But try to insure you surf Cokes, Jailbreaks (Himmafushi), Honky’s, Sultans & Tucky Joes! They are amazing waves!

Fishing, Maldives

Fishing has always been the lifeblood of island nations and the Maldives is no different, this place has been dubbed the ‘fishiest’ places on the planet. Pelagic species are often the favourite target although there are a lot of reef and shallow water species that will give you a run for your money like Bonefish, Barracuda, Groper, Snapper and the king of fish, the Giant Trevally. You will need some heavy duty gear to get the big GT’s found out here onto the boat.

Cruising the deep waters along the outside of the reef Yellow fin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna, Dolphin Fish, Wahoo, Sail Fish and Marlin all cruise these waters. With the freedom to fish off all three boats along with experienced fishing guides make sure you bring plenty of your favourite lures.

10 Nights / 11 Days

Departing Male harbour in the Maldives you will find the island nations most famous waves in the North Male Atolls. The long breaks offer right and lefts for the beginner to intermediate surfer to the professional with waves ranging from 1 – 3 metres. In general SUP surfers may prefer the South Male Atolls depending on the size of the swell.

A surf charter should be flexible, not locked into strict daily miles and locations. Rather it should be based around mother natures plans for the swell and wind. Because of this we will not finalise the Charter itinerary with the Captain and crew until closer to departure. With a generous milage allowance we have the luxury to travel further than any standard charter to get away from the crowds and into the best waves. Rest assured, you will get what you are looking for with a boat and experienced crew that know the area very well. We’ll be trying to get you to famous waves like Cokes, Jailbreaks, Honky’s, Sultans and Tucky Joes. They are amazing waves.

  • Spare leg rope & spare fins and
  • feel free to throw your game rod, lures
  • short board or mini mal if you have room.
  • Comfortable clothes, dress for the tropics and get ready to relax.

We will give everyone the chance to visit local and resort islands. On local islands it is respectful to cover your shoulders and knees while walking the streets and visiting local establishments. Resort islands usually charge a visitors fee of $100USD depending on the level of luxury which may also be used at the restaurant and bar, a way of making sure your spend at least $100 at the resort. Dress code depends on the resort and the level of luxury; in general you do not need to cover your shoulders and knees inside a resort but it might be a good idea to dress appropriately should you wish to have dinner at a five star resorts restaurant.

The sun is HOT. We would be very very surprised if anyone needed any kind of wetsuit or neoprene tops while surfing, paddling, swimming and snorkelling. Should you like a wetsuit for diving we can provide one on the boat.

Sun protection and keeping hydrated is important. You will be given your own reusable water bottle on board with access to unlimited filtered water and ice. Water tee’s, long and short sleeve, surf hats, sun glasses, lots of sunscreen as a minimum.

Duty free alcohol will not be permitted to enter the Maldives, if you do purchase Duty Free it will be taken off you on arrival and you can pick it up on your way back home.

Legally, if you’re 18 and not a Muslim, you can buy and drink alcohol. However since the Maldives are an Islamic nation, alcohol is effectively banned for the local population.

However, nearly all resorts and liveaboard boats are licensed to serve alcohol. The expatriate liquor permit which used to allow expats to buy alcohol for their own consumption has been removed. The only place near Male, aside from resorts, where people can drink alcohol is at the Hulhule Island Hotel, commonly known as HIH or the airport hotel.

All meals, snacks, filtered water, tea & coffee are included

After a short leave of absence our Sri Lankan Chef Cook “Iresh” is back on the Carpe Diem. He is a well experienced chef, and knows how to make those buffets special, extra tasty and of high standard. He is assisted by a local chef “Rakeeb” to add some local flavor to the menu. Both have them have been working on the Diem for many years. The menu covers a wide range of different international cuisines blended together for you to enjoy. If you have time to spare the local ferry to the bustling Male City, approx $1US each way. The ferry ticket booth is infront of the Coffee Club/Burger King.

Alternatively you can take a 15min bus ride around to Hulemale it is much quieter. There are nice restaurants & cafes along the beach. Note there is no bikinis on this beach.

You can get select major currencies exchanged at the airport after arrival at the forex center in the airport itself, hower USD is accepted almost everywhere across the Maldives.

Settling bar tabs, dives, any additional expenses can be done so by using credit card.

“Coconut Tree Hulhuvilla” Beach provides a comfortable setting while in Male.
It offers 4-star accommodation with air-conditioned rooms. The hotel has recently been refurbished and provides free Wi-Fi, an airport shuttle can be pre arranged with reception or take a taxi from the airport for $10.

The breakfast is very basic, I would recomend walking to a near by cafe ‘family room’ or ‘bread matters’ they both do a lovely breakfast.

“Simry Beachside Maldives” is another option which is next door to Coconut Tree.

Simry Beachside Maldives offers 3-star accommodation in Male. It also provides massage services, room service and an express check-in and check-out feature.

The rooms have a mini bar, an in-room safe and a laptop safe. They all feature bottled water, a ceiling fan and tea and coffee making facilities.
