This is a SUP dedicated surf trip we’ve been dreaming and planning for years and your chance to surf newly discovered waves with zero crowds in one of the world’s last frontiers.

From October to April the New Ireland Province receives Northern Hemisphere swells from the northwest to northeast. During these months the wind is predominantly from the N/NW and the surf ranges from 3-4ft to 5-6ft in the bigger swells.
Departing from the ship’s home port, Kavieng Harbour. Generally charters start just out of Kavieng itself toward the westward islands of New Hanover (Lavongai). However, depending on the swell and wind, a trip may head eastwards towards Tabar. Charters may also include remote St Matthias (Mussau) or the Admiralty Islands (Manus) to the far northwest.
At the same time seasoned fisherman, scuba divers and snorkelers will find it hard to compare even their finest fishing and diving experience. Expect visibility on bad days to be 20m, good days immeasurable and you’d better pack the heavy duty fishing gear.

About Papua New Guinea
PNG is Australia’s closest neighbour and also one of the least visited countries by Australian tourists with less than 10,000 arriving on the door step via air in 2016. Just the way we like it. Yep, getting around PNG can be tricky with flights often cancelled or roads blocked due to bad weather, civil unrest and local conflicts….BUT it’s all worth it; if you travel with professional and experienced operators.
Papua New Guinea is one of the world’s least explored, culturally and geographically. It is known to have numerous groups of uncontacted peoples, and researchers believe there are many undiscovered species of plants and animals in the interior.
Papua New Guinea is surrounded by coral reefs which are under close watch, in the interests of preservation. Much of the reef systems are unchartered and see very few visitors making them some of the last untouched marine sanctuaries left in the world.
The Waves
On our Moon Tours Stand Up Paddle surf trips with PNG Surfaris you are guaranteed to find the best SUP waves on offer. Without restrictions or fuel constraints we can travel further to find you the best SUP waves you could ever imagine.
PNG is a surf rich country, in the New Ireland region directly around Kavieng has seven or so reef breaks, traveling down New Ireland’s east and central coasts you also have an abundance of rarely surfed breaks, whilst the outer islands offer the same quality waves and variety of breaks.
Surfers have access to a variety of rights and lefts that are generally in the vicinity of 3′-5′ but occasionally peak at around the 6′ mark which can at times test your abilities.
The northerly swell season runs from around October to May producing some world-class breaks that can be surfed on any tide. The surf is generally not as powerful as other regions in the world but you can certainly get sizeable, challenging and even shallow breaking waves depending on your choice of reef break. A variety of good quality surf breaks that have a mixture of reef, point and beach breaks.
If you’re chasing ‘Mavericks’ style waves; then PNG is not your recommended choice of surf destination. However, the ‘slab’ on bigger days can see 4-6 feet. Bare in mind that when it’s REALLY BIG you are a long way from home and surfing over coral reef. Therefore, we recommend that you always surf within your limits and improve! There is nothing better than coming home surfing better than when you left.
FISHING
Whether you’re an experienced game fisherman or at best a weekend warrior, the fishing here will likely be anything you have experienced before or will again. Reef fish, sport fish and large pelagic’s are all commonly caught. BIG GT’s, Dog Tooth Tuna, Red Bass, Spanish Mackerel, Wahoo and Yellow Fin will give you and your gear a run for it’s money while Blue, Golden and Spotted Trevally, Job Fish, Snapper, Barracuda, Coral Trout are fun on lighter gear.
Trawling, popping, jigging or with fly be prepared to test your gear and bring some spares of your favourite baits. Pop or fly over shallow sand cays fringed by reef for smaller GT’s in the 10-15kg range as well as Golden and Blue Trevelly and Red Bass, if it’s the big boys in the 20kg+ range throw your popper and fly’s over deeper larger bommies.
*Fishing is strictly catch and release in the quest for preservation unless kept for immediate consumption. Barbless or crushed down barbs must be used.
DIVING & SNORKELLING
Adventurous hungry divers the world over have been visiting PNG for over 30 years, however the remote location keeps most away so don’t expect to see any other charter boats on the journey. Any dives will be completely private. Expect bommie, wall and drift dives, hard and soft corals, reef fish, large pelagic’s and reef sharks. Visibility on bad days would be 20m/65ft and the good days immeasurable. Some will argue it is the best in the world.
Diving in this area is all new and extremely exotic, here you have the chance to discover and name all new dive sites on almost every dive. Most dives can happen right off the swim platform of the mother ship, simply stick your head over the side and you’ll be drawn on by the allure of this untouched reef system. The flat bottom and stable dive tender, set up with tank holders is perfect for off boat dives.
Equipment is all new in 2017 and well maintained, bring your favourite mask and snorkel as well as fins if you feel inclined, otherwise we can supply the lot.
Divemaster onboard
We cater for all levels of certified recreational diver and have a PADI qualified Divemaster onboard who can help you experience some of the most amazing SCUBA diving available on this planet. Wreck or reef dives; we have you covered.
To be able to enjoy the incredible wreck and pristine wall dives in PNG you must have your dive certification and suitable dive insurance.
For first timers, we can offer a ‘Discover Scuba Diving’ course, which is a very basic introduction to diving experience.

PNG EXPLORER
Affectionately known as “The Explorer” this 23-metre steel ship was built to survey and withstand the Southern Seas. Originally a prawn trawler, she has been refitted as a comfortable and spacious live-aboard for up to 10 guests and 10 crew. It is powered by a 504 horse-power engine and equipped with 2 generators, dive compressor, desalination plant and three identical, 2x 4.8m in survey tenders.
Tenders
Our onboard taxi service is used to run you to and from the breaks, fishing spots or dive sites. These 4.8 meter (in survey) vessels always have an esky onboard full of cold drinks.
Jet Ski
Our 2019 Yamaha FXHO jet ski is the work horse of our charter operations; primarily used as a safety craft.
The Cabins
There are five ample cabins set up as three twin berths and two single doubles. Keeping cool in the equatorial climate is managed through a combined ventilation and air conditioning system.
The Living Area
hosts a large flat screen TV/DVD, sound system, a small library and sofas. A modern galley is fitted with commercial-grade appliances capable of pumping out three fantastic meals a day plus snacks.
The lower back deck
Two hot water showers and three toilets. The lower ‘surf’ deck is purpose-built with the tropical surfer in mind, with padded alloy racks for 30 boards. Accessing the mighty Explorer from the water is made easy by an aluminium dive ladder attached to a large duckboard at water level. Though for fast and safe transfers to the breaks we run two tenders, each kitted out with seating, awnings, board racks, access ladders and fishing rod holders.
Shady Upper Deck
Hands down the perfect spot for lounging on day beds while admiring PNG’s stunning scenery. It’s also the main dining area onboard, featuring a well-stocked, icy cold beer fridge, a large barbeque and an outdoor sound system.

I’m a big wave rider, will the waves in PNG satisfy me?

- We recommend you bring 1 or 2 boards. You could expect waves to be on average 2-4 feet, with bigger days from 4-6+ feet. Boards must not exceed length of 9’2 due to Kavieng Flight restrictions.

How do I get to Kavieng
Flights to Kavieng
Flights can be booked through your travel agent or directly with the airlines.
Travelling from Australia with sporting goods we recommend you travel with Air Niugi, a QANTAS code share partner. We consider this to be the most reliable and effective way of getting yourself to Kavieng with surfboards and SUP’s.
Australia to PNG flights are operated by Air Niugini, Qantas, Virgin and Airlines PNG.
What is there to do aside from surfing?
Yes, we encourage guests to go and meet the locals and see how they live, school and work. It’s a fantastic insight into this amazing Melanesian lifestyle and culture. The locals are very hospitable to guests and are more than happy to share stories. Equally, they are as interested in your life, so if you’re open to it, be prepared to talk about yourself!
Can I bring duty free alcohol onboard?

Yes, in fact we encourage you bring your own spirits, as they are very expensive in PNG and are not usually stocked on the boat. However Beer, wine, & mixers are available onboard.
How do I settle my final bill on board with a credit card?
Yes there is an eftpos machine on-board. Bills will be settled the morning before you fly out. The transaction is in PNG Kina and normally converted from AUD to PGK. Plus there is a 4.5% charge per transaction. Alternatively you can settle accounts with AUD, USD or PGK
What sort of power socket does the boat have?
Plugs are Australian 240V. The power supply is stable; we charge and use computers 24-7, BUT, if your concerned bring a surge protector to go between your device and the power supply.

Help yourself to tea, coffee and juice. We love a good coffee and showcase the best of PNG, so maintain your habit and kick start your day with a latte.
We provide soft-drinks, beer and wine for sale. If you prefer a specific soft drink as a mixer for the strong stuff, then let us know in advance.
Is PNG safe?
As with travelling to any foreign country, we ask that you use your common sense. Be mindful of your belongings and note that it’s best not to walk around alone. Crime is mostly petty theft, and unfortunately, domestic violence is more common than we’d like to think. So, while it’s important to be on your guard and respect the local culture, don’t be afraid to have a chat, a laugh and be friendly with locals.

Do I need a visa for PNG?
We recommend you organise your visa online through the PNG Immigration website. Most passport holders can apply for the ‘Easy Visitor Permit’ for 30 or 60 days. This application attracts a fee of US $50.
Prior to completing the application, please check you have at least six (6) months validity on your passport, and that you have booked your flights to and from PNG.
