ABOUT THIS EXPEDITION

Nusa Tenggara Timur (East Nusa Tenggara) is a province of more than 500 islands and an eco-region, high in biodiversity, with rich marine fauna and smoking volcanoes. Komodo National Park is a world heritage site, and the water surrounding the island contains some of the richest biodiversity on earth. However, this is a surf trip where we venture beyond Komodo: we make our way to Sumba and Mengkudu, to hunt uncrowded surf and discover picturesque villages, as well pristine nature. We relax on deserted beaches, encounter gushing waterfalls, experience ikat traditions, local cultural practices and enjoy warm welcomes in rarely-visited places.

SURF

Search for surf breaks off the beaten track. Nusa Tenggara Timur offers perfect dry season conditions and very accessible waves, away from the surf hubs of Indonesia. We stop by the hidden breaks of Rote, Savu and other islands en route – enjoy uncrowded waves selected especially for Kudanil Explorers.

Surf based trips in the Sumba & Rote area from April – October and then in Raja Ampat/Papua from Dec – March.

DIVE

Indonesia is home to some of the world’s best dive and snorkelling sites and some of the finest of these are also the least accessible through normal modes of transport. On the Kudanil we have access to some of the most remote and most beautiful waters on the planet, underwater worlds teeming with life. More coral fish species than any other waters in the world and a home to pelagic life from manta rays to whale sharks. Emerge to find yourself within Indonesia’s most breathtaking beach and volcano landscapes.

DAY 1

Arrive at Kupang and embark by afternoon. Stopping by Semau island, wander the beaches and cruise around the island on dinghies before the overnight journey to Rote.

DAY 2

We’ll wake up in Rote or one of its surrounding islands – totally depending on swell, wind and your preference! We will spend 2 days here having the choice between about 8 waves suiting every level from easy to testing. Apart from surfing we will seek for manta rays, kayak through the mangroves and go diving. Travel inland to see traditional villages and farmers who cultivate many lontar varieties. In the evening, we depart for Savu.

DAY 3

We will anchor in a bay that has a left and right on offer. The wave is fickle but when it’s on, it’s on. If Mother Nature does not cooperate we spend the day exploring the island of Savu: detached from modernity and tourism, we’ll discover a mix of Christian and animist traditions, where ritual dances are performed to bring rain and for weddings and burials. Seaweed plantations and salt farms, deserted beaches, traditional ikat in timeless villages.

DAY 4

In Raijua, we’re blessed with a set of classic lefts on the SW tip of this remote, desolate island, including a really long, smoking fast, lower tide left that can barrel top-to-bottom for long sections. Or have a crack at the cliff-hugging wedge. Even if the surfing shouldn’t be delivering, the fishing all the way between Savu and Dana is absolutely fantastic. This is about as remote as it gets in Indonesia and the closest island to Australia.

DAY 5

This island south of Sumba has several breaks on it but mainly surfed are the ultra consistent left and a bit more fickle right that works best in the morning. Expect the raw Indian Ocean hammering onto the reef. The set up is stunning and also the fishing is very good when you take the dinghy for a spin through the channel. We regularly catch Wahoo, Barracuda, GT or Tuna here.

DAY 6

Wake up in the morning to one of Sumba’s longest and finest rights, the wave is about 300+m long on good days. Depending on the tides and swell it goes from mellow and cruisy to hollow and challenging. Go wakeboarding, snorkelling, kayaking, SUPing in the bay when the trade winds blow between the morning and afternoon surf or we take the dinghy and check out another wave or two around the corner during lunchtime or do a half day land trip to a traditional Sumba house with stone graves and a stunning view overlooking the bay from above the cliffs.

DAY 7

In Sindikari bay, we spend a day surfing, snorkelling & fishing and organise a 4hour land trip to an impressive waterfall where you can swim and relax. Optionally, we are able to visit a traditional bamboo house district of Waikabubak an unrivalled glimpse into how life is lived by people little affected by the outside world.

DAY 8

This area is blessed with a few right-handers as wellasaleftthatholdsalotofsizeandisabig wave spot on a swell – the rights are generally better and longer but the left has its days, too. In this area we’ll find one of the waves recently surfed by an ex-world champ in a surf clip that went viral…but we won’t tell you which one, you’ll have to come and find out yourself.

DAY 9

Arrive at Kupang and embark by afternoon. Stopping by Semau island, wander the beaches and cruise around the island on dinghies before the overnight journey to Rote.

DAY 10

Disembarkation in Tambolaka
