Celebrating 40 years since Denis Bartell started his record breaking journeys across the Simpson Desert
Cecil Madigan became the first European to cross the northern Simpson Desert in 1939. He named the desert after the then President of the SA Branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia. 40 years ago, in 1977, Denis Bartell set a record for a double crossing of Australia from Cape Bryon to Steep Point and back again, via a cross country route through the Simpson Desert. On that trip he named the big dune he loves so much, ‘Big Red’.
We will take you along the footsteps of these intrepid explorers but make know mistake, 40 years on The Madigan Line is one of the most remote and toughest crossings in Australia.
