About Namibia

Namibia, nestled on Africa’s southwest coast, shares borders with Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Known as one of the world’s least populated countries, Namibia offers endless horizons and vast, untouched landscapes.

This is a land where the desert takes center stage, constantly shifting and transforming, creating a scenery that feels like it belongs to another world. Its wildlife has evolved to thrive in the harsh, arid environment—graceful oryx, desert-adapted elephants, and the charming bat-eared fox are just a few of the creatures that call Namibia home.

But it’s not just the wildlife that has learned to survive and flourish—Namibia’s people are a testament to adaptation and cultural diversity. From the ochre-coated hair of the Himba people to the unique clicking language of the Damara, the San Bushmen of the Kalahari, and the German descendants of Swakopmund, Namibia’s cultures are as captivating as its landscapes.

 Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park is renowned for its abundance of waterholes, ranging from natural springs and fountains to man-made boreholes. These waterholes provide some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the park, especially during the dry winter months, when animals emerge from the bush to quench their thirst.

A few camps within the park feature floodlit waterholes, offering the unique thrill of night-time wildlife sightings, where everything from prowling predators to skittish antelope can be observed under the cover of darkness.

Each waterhole has its own personality, attracting different species throughout the year. Wildlife sightings can vary not only between waterholes but also season to season, making every visit a new adventure. Below is a quick guide to some of the park’s most remarkable waterholes, where you can expect unforgettable encounters with both big game and smaller, elusive creatures.

Khaudum National Park

Khaudum National Park is a rugged, untamed paradise of dry forest, acacia woodlands, and dense thorn bush thickets that flourish along its riverine zones. The park’s three dry rivers, typical of Kalahari forests, are lined with reeds, peaty bogs, and, in some places, beautiful water lilies floating in seasonal pools.

This remote region is the very essence of African wilderness—raw, unspoiled, and teeming with life. Often referred to as Namibia’s Forgotten Wilderness, Khaudum offers a true off-the-beaten-path experience. It’s a place where elephants outnumber people, and nature reigns supreme, making every journey through this hidden gem a thrilling adventure.

About Botswana

Botswana, a landlocked gem in southern Africa, shares its borders with South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The Kalahari Desert stretches across nearly 70% of the country, shaping its landscape and defining its character. In stark contrast, the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta, bursts with life as it transforms the desert into a lush oasis. To the north lies Chobe National Park, home to some of the largest elephant herds on the planet.

Vast and untamed, Botswana offers a safari experience like no other. With thousands of square miles of untouched wilderness, it’s a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Whether traversing the sun-scorched salt pans, exploring the savannah and wetlands, or venturing deep into the Kalahari, Botswana promises exceptional game viewing and unforgettable encounters across its varied landscapes.

Kalahari Game Reserve

The Kalahari Game Reserve, located in the heart of Botswana’s vast Kalahari Desert, is one of the largest protected wilderness areas in the world. Established in 1961, it spans 52,800 square kilometers—an area larger than the Netherlands and covering nearly 10% of Botswana’s land. It holds the title of the second-largest game reserve in the world, offering a landscape of serene, unspoiled beauty.

This extraordinary reserve is home to a wealth of unique wildlife. Roaming its plains are the South African giraffe, bush elephant, white rhino, brown hyena, honey badger, meerkat, yellow mongoose, South African cheetah, caracal, Cape wild dog, cape fox, sable antelope, gemsbok, springbok, and chacma baboon. The land is mostly flat and gently undulating, with bush and grasses blanketing the sand dunes and scattered areas of taller trees. Fossilized river valleys dotted with salt pans add to the surreal beauty of this ancient desert.

The Kalahari is not only a haven for wildlife but also a place of deep cultural significance. The San people, also known as Bushmen, have called this region home for thousands of years. They once roamed these lands as nomadic hunters, living in harmony with the rhythms of the desert, preserving their ancient traditions and profound knowledge of the natural world.

Chobe National Park

Situated in Botswana’s northwest, near the border with Namibia, Chobe National Park is a land of contrasts and home to the largest population of elephants in the world, estimated at around 100,000 individuals. Here, majestic teak forests flourish, providing shelter for wildlife in this remote wilderness.

The park’s broad plains shift with the seasons, expanding and contracting as rivers and streams rise and fall. Lions, leopards, and elusive African wild dogs roam these grasslands, taking advantage of the changing landscape. At the northern edge of the park lies Kasane, the gateway and administrative hub of the region, perfectly positioned for exploring this wildlife-rich paradise.

The Chobe Riverfront is a highlight of the park, especially during the dry season (April to November), when the river becomes the only major water source north of the Okavango. During this time, elephants and buffalo gather in massive herds along the riverbanks, drawn from far and wide by the promise of water. Like the Okavango, the Chobe River originates in the highlands of Angola and flows into the mighty Zambezi River, sustaining life along its course.

In addition to the park’s famous elephants and buffalo, Bushbuck, Puku antelope, and a vibrant array of birdlife thrive here. Chobe is also celebrated for its breathtaking sunsets, where the sky ignites with vivid colors, creating unforgettable moments along the river’s edge.

The Okavango Delta

Over 80% of Botswana is dominated by the Kalahari Desert, a vast, arid expanse that transforms each year when the mighty Okavango River swells and disappears into the sands, creating the world’s largest inland delta—the Okavango Delta. This extraordinary oasis, covering 22,000 square kilometers, sits at the southern edge of the Great Rift Valley and is home to an estimated 9,000 species of flora and fauna, making it one of the world’s most coveted destinations for game viewing and safari adventures.

While the surrounding areas are semi-arid, the delta itself is a breathtaking mosaic of crystal-clear streams, shimmering lagoons, sprawling floodplains, and forested islands. As the waters spread through the landscape, life flourishes, and during the dry winter season, vast herds of wildlife converge at the edges of the floodwaters. This seasonal migration provides visitors with one of the most spectacular natural displays on Earth, as predators and prey gather in large numbers, creating unforgettable moments at every turn.

Whether you’re gliding through the waters in a mokoro (traditional canoe) or exploring on foot, the Okavango Delta offers a safari experience unlike any other—where desert meets oasis, and the rhythm of life follows the ebb and flow of the waters.

The Victoria Falls & Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

In 1857, David Livingstone became the first European to lay eyes on the magnificent falls, naming them in honor of Queen Victoria. But to the locals, they are known by a name that truly captures their essence: Mosi-oa-Tunya—“The Smoke that Thunders.”

The falls stretch 1.7 kilometers across the Upper Zambezi and drop between 90 and 107 meters into the Lower Zambezi, creating a thundering roar that resonates across the landscape. On average, 550,000 cubic meters of water cascade over the edge every minute, transforming the Zambezi River from a serene flow into a ferocious torrent, carving a path through dramatic gorges below.

During the annual flood season from February to May, with a peak in April, the falls are at their most spectacular. Towering clouds of mist rise over 400 meters, sometimes even higher, and can be seen from up to 50 kilometers away, offering a breathtaking sight that seems almost supernatural.

Beyond the falls, Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park provides a haven for a variety of wildlife, including antelope, zebra, giraffe, elephant, warthog, and a colorful array of birds. With no natural predators within the park, the animals are notably relaxed, making this an ideal destination for close encounters and exceptional photo opportunities.

Whether marveling at the falls’ immense power or enjoying a game drive through the tranquil park, Mosi-oa-Tunya offers visitors an unforgettable experience steeped in nature’s grandeur and wonder.

Our A&K Sanctuary Baines Okavango experience includes a scenic flight from Maun over the Okavango Delta, landing on a remote bush airstrip via a light aircraft. Due to aircraft weight restrictions, luggage is limited to 15kg per person, including both checked and hand luggage.

For anything exceeding this limit, secure storage options are available:

With the airline in Maun – Many guests opt to leave excess bags with the airline, which can be retrieved upon return.

With Sanctuary Retreats – If you are staying at another Sanctuary property before or after Baines, they can often store extra luggage for you.

This is a common practice for fly-in safaris, ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey into the Delta. Soft-sided bags are recommended for easier loading into the aircraft.

On the final day of our stay, we will return to Maun the same way, via light aircraft. These flights are not fixed schedules and can be adjusted to some extent to accommodate the group’s needs.

Flight times are typically confirmed 24 hours in advance, but in most cases, departures are scheduled for the morning, aiming to have you back in Maun by around 10 AM.

We traditionally offer transfers from the airport to the hotel or lodge on the official start date, September 10

If you are arriving earlier, going back to the airport just for the group transfer doesn’t make sense—it will take just as long and cost as much as heading directly to Windhoek Mountain Lodge in this case.

If everyone may be arriving at different times and staying in different places, we’ll need to make a plan (as we say in Africa). The easiest option? It might be as simple as taking a taxi from your accommodation straight to Windhoek Mountain Lodge. Expect to pay around $40–50 USD, and you’ll need local Namibian Dollars (NAD) for this.

Please send us your arrival details and accommodation plans if you’re staying in Windhoek before the tour. This will help us coordinate logistics.

We recommend having:

✅ WISE card (or similar) for VISA debit transactions and ATM withdrawals.

✅ $1,000 USD cash in a mix of denominations. Bills should be clean, unmarked, and preferably no older than 2013.

✅ Local Currency:

Namibia (NAD) – Pegged 1:1 to the South African Rand (ZAR), both are accepted in Namibia. However, NAD is NOT accepted in South Africa. We suggest carrying $300-$500 AUD worth of ZAR, or withdrawing NAD on arrival.

Botswana (Pula – BWP) – While some lodges and border towns accept USD, ZAR, and NAD, these currencies are less commonly used in Botswana. If needed, Pula can be withdrawn at ATMs after crossing the border.

Jimmy will create a WhatsApp chat group today and send you an invite. Please download the app and join ASAP.Keep in mind that any messages sent before you join won’t be visible, so get in early!

If you need accommodation before the trip, the Hilton Windhoek is a great option—central, comfortable, and well-located.

You must eat at Joe’s Beer House at least once! Other great spots:

Hilton Sky Bar (amazing rooftop views)

Stellenbosch Wine Bar (great food & wine selection)

If you are looking for things to see and do in Windhoek here are some ideas.

Christuskirche (Christ Church)

A historic German fort from 1890 that once housed Namibia’s national museum.

Located near the Independence Memorial Museum, making it easy to visit both.

National Museum of Namibia

Showcases Namibia’s ethnographic, cultural, and historical heritage.

Features artifacts from indigenous tribes, colonial-era relics, and natural history exhibits.

Great for trying Namibian beer and experiencing the local vibe.
