DAY 11 – DEPART

This morning, drive back to Kigali and depart.

  • Hidden amongst the thick rainforest of Volcanoes National Park in the northwest of Rwanda, lives one of the planet’s most endangered species: the Mountain gorilla.
  • The park, which contains five out of the eight Virunga Mountain volcanos, is the most accessible gorilla national park in theworld and is home to 10 habituated groups of these rare animals.
  • Aside from seeing gorillas, you can track the rare Golden monkey, trek to the top of Mount Bisoke and see its enormous craterlake or take a guided walk through local communities gaining insight into Rwandan culture.
  • Another popular activity is hiking to the tomb of American primatologist Dian Fossey who spent nearly two decades studying gorillas in the park -her story has since been told in the film adaptation of her novel Gorillas in the Mist.
  • Other nearby activities include a guided trip to the banana beer brewery or Musanze Caves.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

  • Volcanoes National Park is open for gorilla trekking and hiking throughout the year.
  • Trails become very slippery in heavy rain and hiking is definitely easier in the dry season months, from June to August, and to a lesser extent in September, January and February.
  • During the rains, the climate at the higher elevations is cooler and the gorillas prefer to remain on the lower slopes; it is therefore easier to track and spot them.

  • The Masai Mara plays host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. 1,500 square kilometres of broad, biscuit coloured savannah sprawls as home to huge numbers of birds (almost 600 species including many raptors) and animals and is contiguous with the enormous expanse of the Serengeti; the two combine as the most diverse ecosystem on the continent.
  • The word ‘mara’ comes from the local dialect, Maa, as spoken by the Masai and means mottled.
  • Every year the Mara witnesses the most incredible animal phenomenon on the planet -the wildebeest migration. This mammalian train moves north from the Serengeti in search of fresh pasture, and returns south around October, a heaving line of grunting, snorting life that stretches for miles.
  • At the Mara River they mass together nervously on the banks before plunging frantically onwards; their quest for food overwhelming their fear of the crocodiles that lie in wait for their annual feast. This incredible spectacle involves the movement of over a million wildebeest and their groupies, half a million Thomson’s gazelle, half a million zebra as well as smaller herds of topi and eland. These herds are closely followed by the predators, primarily lions.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

  • January to March are hot dry months with low water levels and short grass. The wildlife have to fight over resources and can easily be seen gathered around water sources.
  • The rains arrive between April and May and are characterised by short, intense thunderstorms and beautiful rainbows. The landscape turns lush and wildflowers abound. This is also when there are the lowest visitor numbers ensuring an exclusive experience.
  • Between June and October the migration arrives in the Masai Mara and there are numerous river crossings.
  • The last two months of the year have less intrusive rain. Temperatures are still high, although the mornings can be rather chilly.

MEMORIES TO LAST A LIFE TIME

With the benefit of digital photography don’t hold back taking pics, you can always delete them. We recommend packing your largest lense, all safari vehicles have padded rest for stable long distance shots.

RWANDA

MONEY MATTERS

We urge you to try to spend all of your Francs while you are in Rwanda because the reverse exchange rate from Francs is very unfavorable. Be aware that only paper currency will normally be accepted for exchange. Very few places in Rwanda accept credit cards. Only the major hotels in Kigali plus a few airlines accept them. There are money-changing facilities in Kigali, which we recommend you use, as it is more difficult to change money while on safari. Visitors are advised that if they are carrying US Dollar cash with them, the notes should be no smaller than $100 denomination, and should have been issued no earlier than 2000. We recommend that you carry cash for convenience and security, and that you change about US$200-300 of this into Rwanda francs at the start of your tour. Cash is more easily exchanged in Rwanda, as many facilities are very reluctant to accept payment by traveler’s cheque.

WEATHER

Best time to go to Rwanda

A combination of tropical location and high altitude ensures that most of Rwanda has a temperate year-round climate. Temperatures rarely stray above 30 degrees Celsius by day or below 15 degrees Celsius at night, throughout the year. The exceptions are the chilly upper slopes of the Virunga Mountains, throughout the country, seasonal variations in temperature are relatively insignificant. Most parts of the country receive in excess of 1,000 mm of precipitation annually, with the driest months being July to September and the wettest February to May.

TIME ZONE

The time zone in Rwanda is GMT +2 hours throughout the year.

LANGUAGE

Kinyarwanda is the official language in Rwanda, although French and English are widely spoken and understood.

KENYA

MONEY MATTERS

The small amount of local currency you may need during your stay in Kenya can be obtained at authorized facilities (such as at authorized hotels, banks and foreign exchange bureaus). Clients going directly on safari upon arrival in Nairobi may exchange money at the airport currency exchange if they wish.

TIPPING

Porters: A tip of US $1.00 per person is appropriate for two pieces of baggage at airports, hotels, lodges and camps. If you are travelling with more than two pieces of baggage, an additional tip of US $1.00 per bag is recommended.

Driver-Guide: One driver-guide accompanies each land vehicle on safari. It is customary to tip your driver-guide on the last day you are with him or her. Approximately US $5 – US $7 per traveller per day is considered a good tip for a driver-guide (based on 4 – 6 travellers in a vehicle). If there are only 2 or 3 travellers in a vehicle, you may consider raising this amount to approximately US $6 – US $8 per traveller per day in recognition of the individual attention given to a smaller size group.

Safari Escort: In addition to a driver-guide, some groups are accompanied by a professional safari escort. It is customary to tip your safari escort on the last day you are with him or her, and the recommended tip is US $8 to US $10 per traveller, per day. As with the tip for a driver guide, smaller groups (in this case, 5 or less) might consider tipping slightly more – in the range of approximately US $10 – US $12 per traveller per day.

Mobile Camping: If you are travelling on an mobile camping safari (either independently or on a programme) you will be served by a camp manager and several staff, for whom an overall tip of US $10 – US $14 per traveller per day in camp is recommended. This should be given to your guide on the last day for distribution among all camp staff. Again, smaller groups (in the case of 5 or less) might consider tipping in the slightly higher range of approximately US $12 – US $18 per traveller, per day (this applies to the exclusive camps, where tips are not included, and not to the permanent tented camps).

WEATHER

Best time to go to Kenya

Best time to go: June to October, December to March
Best value time to go: April, May and November

Kenya is a year round destination and has something different to offer visitors throughout the year. In January and February it is hot and dry, and the animals gather round the water sources making for easy game viewing. There are also large concentrations of bird life on some of the Rift Valley lakes around this time. March to May is the green season and for some this is the best time to travel – the rain usually falls in short showers with bursts of sunshine in between, making everything refreshingly beautiful and green. July to September are the country’s coolest months and the famous wildebeest migration is traditionally present in Kenya around this time. The incredible migration only happens in East Africa and around this time the grasslands of the Masai Mara in Kenya are covered by a mass of moving wildebeest as far as the eye can see. October to January is also a delightful time to visit Kenya and compares to springtime, the days are warm and the evenings cool. Short, scattered rains fall in November to freshen up the country and lay the dust. This is also a good time for snorkelling and diving off the coast.

TIME ZONE

GMT + 3 hours.

LANGUAGE

English and Swahili are the official languages in Kenya.
