About Maldives

Scattered across the equator in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the gem like islands of the Maldives depict the rare vision of a tropical paradise. Palm fringed islands with pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons, crystal clear warm water and stunning coral reefs with abundant varieties of marine life and hosting a massive variety of world class waves that are now accessible to the travelling surfer. There are over 1,192 islands in the Maldives Republic, measuring 820 km’s north to south and 120 km’s east to west, the closest neighbors are India and Sri Lanka.

Diving in Maldives

Maldivian coral reefs are home to the richest diversity in the region and are the seventh largest on the globe, accounting for 5% of the world’s reef area. They are world famous for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts and beginners alike, offering countless opportunities to swim with a wide variety of marine life, large and small, in crystal clear waters. Diving in the Maldives is a year-round activity with water temperatures a constant 26-29°C

Sea and sky are clearest from December to May, with plankton more abundant in October and November, making the sea murkier but with bigger fish more active and more easily seen. Mantas, whale sharks, turtles, reef sharks and hammerhead sharks are found in the Maldives all year round.

The asian style 300m2 Spa is the largest of its kind in the Maldives. Spanning two decks, facilities consist of six treatment rooms, including one for couples’ therapies, a secluded deck for open-air Thai massage or meditation and a shaded spa lounge for relaxation and yoga.

Enjoy the sounds of the sea and the warmth of the sun while practicing yoga as the sun rises. No experience necessary and all skill levels welcome. This session will include asanas (poses), pranayama (breathing) and meditation. If you are new to Yoga, our introduction is perfect for you.

By practicing simple and easy yogic techniques, the body and mind begin to work in harmony making for a healthier and stress-free life.

Surfing and Paddling

Got a surfboard or stand up, the crew will make sure you are never too far away from those postcard-worthy waves you’ve always dreamed of. During the last decade, surfing in the Maldives has attracted many surfers from all over the world. The same swells hitting Indonesia deliver the goods to the Maldives except that the latitude is a little higher and the SE exposure has less energy. There are three main surfing areas;

  1. The North and South Male Atoll, the surf season runs from April to October during the South-West Monsoons. The bigger swells run from May to August with 2 to 8 ft waves on offer all season.
  2. Central Atoll standard waves are long and clean with size varying between 2 and 8ft as well. During southern hemisphere winter (April-October), it’s pretty much never flat.
  3. Southern Atolls right at the southern point of the Maldives are best for surf from February to April and from September to November, there are always waves in the area but the winds become very strong at other times of the year.

Surf based itineraries upon request.

Good to know

The Maldives has a tropical climate with warm temperatures all year round and enjoys a great deal of sunshine. The temperature varies very little throughout the year and is usually found between 25° and 32° C. Although the weather pattern is determined by the monsoons, the Maldives sits on the equator so the monsoons aren’t as defined as in neighbouring countries. Severe storms are very rare.

The local currency is Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR) and it is possible to change money at the airport upon arrival. The exchange rate varies roughly between 15 MVR and 15.42 MVR to 1 USD. Only licensed shops are allowed to accept foreign currencies and USD are the most commonly accepted.

Dress code
Maldives is a Muslim country and it is rightfully expected that visitors respect this by adhering to a certain dress code when visiting local islands.
In Malé one can get the impression that a dress code doesn’t exist, as many tourists ignore it, despite being informed at welcome meetings and by their tour guides. Although things in Male ‘appear’ to be slightly more relaxed than on local islands, the dress code still reflects the great modesty expected by Muslim culture. Appropriate dress for women would be to cover their shoulders and knees, whereas shorts are acceptable for men.

The electric current in the Maldives is 220V, 50HZ AC. The most common standard for power outlets is the British system. It is always wise to bring a travel adaptor as you can occasionally find yourself in need of one in some hotels. We use British power outlets onboard both yachts, please note all cabins are equipped with universal plug adapter.

Import restrictions
Import of the following is strictly prohibited:

  • alcohol
  • food items containing pork meat
  • narcotics
  • objects of religious character
  • pornographic material
  • weapons

PLEASE NOTE that all luggage is scanned prior to arrival.

Recommended onboard clothing is a holiday casual. A strict “no shoes” policy applies to all Scubaspa vessels.
For lounging at the sun decks use of proper sun protection and sunglasses is advisable.

Check-in and check-out

We have two standard airport transfers scheduled for Saturday on 7-night holiday – first at 7 AM and the last one at 8.45 AM. The dive boat will transfer all guests to Velana International Airport near capital Male’.
On 4-night holidays the disembarkation is scheduled at 13:45 after lunch and guests will be transferred to local airport in Maamigili, situated in South Ari atoll, 80 miles away from Male’. 4-night holidays package DOES NOT include local flight ticket back to capital Male’.

Internet onboard vessels
Scubaspa Maldives provides free package of 1GB of data for each guest.
Once your data is used you may upgrade your internet package.

Please note, we provide 4G speed data (up to 15mb/s). The yachts are covered with hot spots, you can log up to 4 appliances at once. The range depends on proximity of broadcasting transmitters located on local islands. Good reception is available most of the time, except for times when yacht crosses open ocean (few hours throughout a week) and more remote areas in Vaavu atoll.

Flying drones
Areas where drones can be flown are very limited in the Maldives, as much of the country consists of islands with sea-plane ports, restricting the use of drones.
To fly a drone in the Maldives you must obtain approval from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and a permit from the MCAA.

Please use the link DRONE PERMIT
It must be submitted to the MCAA by emailing ans@caa.gov.mv
