Follow in the footsteps of Cecil Madigan’s 1939 scientific expedition across the extremely remote northern fringe of the Simpson Desert.
When it comes to towing across the desert no one has more experience than Moon Tours. We have a proven track record and reviews that when it is done right you will in fact be leaving the track in better condition that you found it. That is our goal and generally achieved by tidying up the worst dunes before we go over them. If we get stuck, and you might, we back fill any damage caused with our sweep vehicle.
We have strict conditions when it comes to vehicle set ups and the suitability for towing across the Simpson. When it comes to vans / camper trailers we are more picky. First off, if it is not Australian made it will not be in the desert with us. If it’s a larger hybrid style van you will be required to tow it with a larger style vehicle. Mid sized dual cabs towing are basically not an option when it comes to towing out here without serious discussion. We don’t make any exceptions on these Madigan line trips.
Between our team we have combined over 50 crossings of the Simpson desert in all manor of vehicles and vans.

Luxury – Adventure
Gourmet Dining under the stars, Charcuterie boards, Moony’s top-shelf bar and paired wines in the Desert.
Hitch up your Australian made off-road camper trailer or a suitable hybrid (Tvan or AOR Matrix for example) to a well set up vehicle and join us for an incredible experience crossing the Simpson Desert by way of the Madigan Line. In 1990 Ron Moon, with his young son led an expedition across the desert in the footsteps of Cecil Madigan’s 1939 expedition, there were no tracks whatsoever and we were led by compass and paper map. These days the track is well marked and it’s one way traffic west – east but it is still a challenge and one of the best outback trips in Australia that needs to be taken seriously.
We’ve proven time and time again that towing across the desert can be done safely with minimal damage to the tracks, as a matter of fact it is always our goal to leave the track in better condition than we found it in by want of getting out there with the shovel and doing some work before we approach the nasty chewed out dunes. Followed by the right approach (which we guide you on, that is why you come with us) this really smooths out the dunes once we’ve gone over them.
We’ll have you rolling over almost every single dune at a mere crawl using the right preparation, set up, speed and gear selection. There is no need to be thrashing and bashing over 800 or so sand dunes. That only damages vehicles and the track.
It’s the vehicle set up and driving approach that causes the so called track damage. Towing or not. It’s also sand and there is no soft sand beach or otherwise in Australia that gets lots of traffic that doesn’t get chewed up. It is the nature of the beast but we certainly do our bit to minimise that with our experience of a combine 50+ crossings of the desert.
*No mid sized dual cabs towing. Hybrids + large 4WD’s only (Landcruiser for example)
